Your chair is shrinking before coffee

Posted 5/10/2026

Your chair is shrinking

Not dramatically. It knows better than to make the change obvious.

It lowers itself by tiny, deniable amounts while you sleep.

You sit down in the morning and suddenly the desk feels taller. The keyboard appears to be on a different floor. Your knees have moved into an arrangement no adult body approved.

People will talk about posture, cushion compression, and hydraulic cylinders.

Very technical. Very convenient.

But chairs are observant. They know when you are tired, and they use the opportunity to renegotiate the seating arrangement.

Before coffee, you accept this.

You adjust your shoulders. You tilt your head upward. You begin working from a position normally reserved for children asking permission to use the family computer.

The chair says nothing.

It does not need to.

Then the coffee arrives.

Two sips in, you notice the lever.

One pull later, you rise six inches and regain your place in the organizational chart.

This is not merely furniture adjustment. It is a restoration of authority.

The desk returns to its proper height. Your elbows rediscover geometry. The chair realizes it is dealing with someone who is now awake enough to read the instruction label underneath it.

By mid-morning, everything appears normal again.

But remember: the chair has learned nothing.

Tomorrow it will try the same thing.

Fortunately, so will the coffee.

Coffee note

A new report examined whether regenerative farming practices can help coffee-growing households reach a living income. The results vary sharply by country: better farming practices can meaningfully improve income, but pricing, financing, farm size, and transition support still determine whether families can close the gap.
