There is a moment every morning when you become a real person.
Before that moment, you are technically present, but only in the way a printer is technically online while refusing to print.
You can move. You can make sounds. You may even answer a question. None of this should be treated as legally binding.
Some people call this sleep inertia. Others blame circadian rhythms. I believe the truth is more administrative: overnight, your membership in the human race quietly expires.
Coffee handles the renewal.
The first sip confirms your identity. The second restores nouns. By the third, you remember why you walked into the kitchen and why the spoon in your hand is not, in fact, a tiny mirror.
Then it happens.
Your eyes focus. Your shoulders drop. The day stops looking like an elaborate practical joke. You are once again permitted to form opinions, operate appliances, and reply to emails without opening with “As per my previous confusion.”
Welcome back. Your paperwork has cleared.
Coffee note
The Specialty Coffee Association recently explained why freshly roasted coffee changes so quickly. Carbon dioxide trapped during roasting carries aroma, then gradually escapes; most degassing happens during roughly the first three weeks. Grinding accelerates the process dramatically, which is a useful scientific reason to grind close to brewing.
