Your brain is lying to you again

Posted 19/6/2026

Your brain just confidently walked up to a total stranger and said "I know you from somewhere" like it had any idea what it was talking about. Spoiler: it did not.

This happens more than people realize. You lock eyes with someone across a coffee shop, and suddenly your brain is flipping through its mental rolodex like a panicked librarian. Was it high school? A work thing? A dream? A past life in medieval France? The possibilities are endless and all of them are wrong.

Here is what is actually going on. Your brain is running on fumes. It is pattern-matching on autopilot, grabbing half-remembered faces from the dusty back shelves of your memory and slapping them onto completely innocent strangers. It is not mystical. It is not meaningful. It is just a tired brain doing its best impression of a functioning computer.

The real kicker is that your brain is most likely to pull this trick when it is running low on fuel. Specifically, the good stuff. The dark, beautiful, life-affirming stuff that comes in a mug and smells like a reason to get out of bed.

Caffeine is not just a pick-me-up. It is your facial recognition software getting a proper reboot. Strangers go back to being strangers. That guy at the bus stop stops looking like your old dentist. Order is restored.

How about sending a little feedback over this way, please and thanks. Take a few seconds to let me know at this link.

Thanks
