Your pocket just sent a ghost notification

Posted 19/10/2026

Your phone did not buzz.

You know this because you checked it. Then checked it again, in case the first check was somehow conducted by an unreliable subcontractor.

Nothing.

And yet your pocket definitely performed the tiny electric tap of modern importance. For half a second, you were wanted. Summoned. Possibly invited to a yacht.

Instead, your nervous system had simply sent itself a push notification.

This is the phantom buzz: the brain hears silence, notices an empty space where stimulation usually lives, and fills it with a very convincing little bzzzt. It is less “advanced telecommunications” and more “a raccoon operating the control panel.”

Before coffee, the raccoon has administrative access.

It detects messages that do not exist. It promotes a coat seam to breaking news. It interprets one twitching leg muscle as an urgent communication from the Department of Something Probably Important.

After coffee, reality gets its password reset. Your pocket becomes a pocket again. The yacht invitation remains regrettably absent, but at least you stop holding a full investigation every time your trousers whisper.

Coffee note

The Specialty Coffee Association recently unpacked what “fresh” means after roasting. Carbon dioxide carrying aroma escapes quickly at first, with major changes during roughly the first 20 days. As that protective gas leaves, oxygen moves in and flavour begins to fade. Their practical guide: whole beans are reasonably fresh for about three weeks after roasting, while ground coffee changes much faster.

So your coffee has a freshness window. Your imaginary notifications, apparently, are available forever.
