Your brain is basically a golden retriever

Posted 16/6/2026

You know that feeling when you look up from your phone and somehow an hour has vanished like it never existed? No alarm went off. Nobody called. Time just quietly packed its bags and left without saying goodbye.

Here is what is actually happening inside your skull. When your brain gets tired, it starts looking for the easiest possible thing to do. Scrolling fits that bill perfectly. It requires almost zero effort, delivers tiny little hits of novelty every two seconds, and makes your exhausted brain feel like it is doing something without actually doing anything at all. You are basically a golden retriever chasing a laser pointer around the living room.

App designers know this. They have spent ridiculous amounts of money making sure the next thing is always just one lazy thumb swipe away. But here is the part nobody talks about enough. The real problem is not the app. It is the tired brain holding the phone.

A tired brain is basically a toddler at a birthday party. Easily distracted, running on fumes, grabbing whatever looks shiny. The moment your executive function checks out, the scroll wins every single time.

Now here is the plot twist, coffee does not just wake you up. It actually hands your executive function back to you like a responsible adult returning your car keys. Suddenly the endless scroll looks a lot less interesting and a lot more like the time thief it really is.

Roaster Notes

The Tree Coffee House (https://www.thetree.coffee/ )

Waterloo, Ontario

In their own words: “At The Tree Coffee House, we’re more than coffee — we’re a story that’s still growing.

What began as a family dream has taken root as a specialty coffee roaster, crafting small-batch, ethically sourced coffee right here in Waterloo. Our vision is evolving into a coffee roaster and espresso bar, where flavour, creativity, and community come together.

Our coffee is handcrafted with intention — roasted locally, shared with care, and available through our online shop, local partners, and select retail spaces.

But our mission goes beyond the cup: we’re building a space that will become a cultural and community hub, connecting students, professionals, artists, runners, and families through experiences that inspire.

Every decision we make, from sustainable sourcing and packaging to supporting local and global initiatives, reflects our belief that great coffee can also do good.”

Your brain deserves better than a laser pointer
