You went to get your shoes.
That was the mission. A simple two-shoe operation requiring no committee, no clipboard, and very little courage.
Then you noticed one book leaning sideways.
Three minutes later, the shelf was empty, your shoes remained missing, and you were holding a 2014 takeout menu as if it contained instructions from headquarters.
This is how tired brains travel. They do not move from Point A to Point B. They board a local train, pull the emergency cord near Point Q, and begin reorganizing the station.
The official explanation is distractibility. The unofficial explanation is that unfinished household objects emit a frequency only detectable before coffee.
A mug helps because it creates a small ceremony. Grind. Brew. Pour. Stand still long enough to remember why you entered the room. It does not eliminate side quests, but it may stop you from alphabetizing the spice rack while wearing one shoe.
There is a coffee version of this, too. The Specialty Coffee Association recently explained that green coffee is seasonal and changes as it ages. Fresh-crop coffee can be bright, vivid, and lively; over time, oxygen and other processes gradually soften that spark. Roasters use careful storage, packaging, and inventory management to protect it.
So coffee beans also have a limited window in which they are most focused.
Honestly, relatable.
Coffee note
“Fresh crop” is not merely a cheerful marketing phrase. It describes coffee from the newest harvest after processing and preparation for export. Some coffees keep their character for well over a year; others begin losing brightness within months.
