Your childhood cartoons lied to you

Posted 9/9/2026

Bugs Bunny was funnier at 7am on a Saturday. Road Runner made perfect sense. The Flintstones had actual depth. Or so you thought.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about rewatching old cartoons as an adult. They are genuinely weird. The jokes land differently. The pacing feels like someone edited the whole thing underwater. Colors that once seemed electric now look like they were painted with a soggy crayon.

People love blaming nostalgia for this. And sure, nostalgia plays its role like that one friend who always exaggerates the story. But the real culprit is something far more interesting than fuzzy warm feelings about the past.

It comes down to your brain state when you first watched those cartoons versus your brain state right now reading this. As a kid you were wide awake at ridiculous hours running purely on cereal sugar and pure unfiltered chaos energy. Your brain was firing on all cylinders without a single worry about mortgages, grocery bills, or why the printer never works.

Now you are watching the same cartoon half asleep on a Sunday afternoon wondering where your energy went and why Scooby Doo suddenly seems philosophically hollow. The jokes did not get worse. You just showed up without the fuel.

Coffee levels the emotional playing field in a way nothing else really does. One decent cup and suddenly the world has edges again. Things are funnier. Ideas connect faster. Cartoons might even make sense again.

Roaster/Cafe Notes:

Devil's Head Coffee Roaster (https://devilsheadcoffee.ca/ )

Calgary

In their own words: “Devil’s Head Coffee was born from our passion for the outdoors and a love for great coffee. As avid adventurers in Calgary and the Rocky Mountains, we often found ourselves awake early, tackling trails with terrible coffee in hand. Determined to change that, we began roasting small batches at home, starting with a popcorn popper then an electric drum roaster to now a professional roaster. What started in our Bowness laundry room soon grew into a full-fledged local Calgary coffee roastery and cafe, supplying fresh-roasted, specialty coffee to our community. From roasting 50 lbs a month for curious neighbors to upgrading to a 5 kg roaster in our dedicated roastery, we’ve come a long way.

Today, Devil’s Head Coffee is proud to offer freshly roasted coffee beans for local pickup, in-store enjoyment, and online delivery across Calgary and Canada. Whether you’re fueling your next adventure or just enjoying a quiet morning at home, we’re here to bring you high-quality, small-batch coffee with bold flavors and an adventurous spirit.”
