The slowest line in the building has your name on it. Not because the universe hates you specifically, but because your exhausted, under-caffeinated brain is genuinely terrible at math.
Here is what actually happens. You scan the lines, you count the people, maybe you size up the carts. Your brain runs a quick calculation and confidently points you toward what looks like the fast lane. What your brain forgot to mention is that it is running on fumes, bad sleep, and whatever sad excuse for coffee you had this morning. That is not a recipe for good decision making. That is a recipe for standing behind someone who needs a price check on an item that stopped being sold in 2009.
Scientists have actually looked into this. The phenomenon is called "queue illusion" and it is embarrassingly common. People consistently misjudge line speed because the brain takes shortcuts when it is tired. It skips the important details, like the guy three people ahead paying entirely in coins, or the cashier who moves like they are working through wet concrete.
The fix is almost offensively simple. A decent cup of coffee sharpens the part of your brain responsible for quick judgment calls. Better focus means better reads on which cashier looks like they actually want to be there. It is not magic, it is just caffeine doing what caffeine does.

Roaster/Cafe Notes:
Duck Mountain Coffee (https://www.duckmountaincoffee.com/ )
Regina, SK
In their own words: “a local micro roaster proud to offer the highest quality, ethically sourced, fresh roasted coffee in Saskatchewan. I hope you enjoy artisan roasts as much as I enjoy bringing it to you fresh in your cup.
Saskatchewan is my home provice and Regina is my home. And just like the lanscapes here, coffee offers diversity and connection.
Duck Mountain Provincial Park is where I explored for years with friends, having adventures and connecting with coffee. I learnt how to make a good cup of brew and the passion grew. Now wanting fresh delicious roasted beans, the next step was becoming a roaster myself”
