There is an unspoken agreement happening inside every library on the planet and nobody signed anything to make it official. People shuffle in, hunch their shoulders like they're carrying invisible secrets, and suddenly forget how to use their regular voices. Whole conversations happen in half-breaths and dramatic eyebrow raises.

The funny thing is, libraries stopped being strictly silent a long time ago. Most of them have coffee shops inside now. Actual espresso machines. The irony is almost too good. You can get a flat white twelve feet from the fiction section and nobody bats an eye.

So why does everyone still tiptoe around like they're defusing something? Honestly, the most reasonable answer is also the most obvious one. Nobody in that building has had enough coffee yet. Pre-caffeine humans are cautious, slow-moving creatures who speak in hushed tones and avoid eye contact. It is basically a defense mechanism. Like a hedgehog, but with a library card.

The moment someone gets a proper cup into their system though, something shifts. Shoulders drop. Eyes open fully for the first time all morning. Sentences start having actual endings. Whispering turns into talking. Talking turns into laughing. Someone near the biographies section starts having opinions again.

Coffee does not just wake you up. It reminds you that you are a person with a voice and thoughts and probably something slightly ridiculous to say about whatever you just read.
