You opened the fridge.
There was half a lemon, a jar of mustard, and one container whose contents have entered the witness protection program.
You closed the door.
Then, twelve seconds later, you opened it again.
This is not hunger. Hunger has a plan.
This is the quiet belief that the refrigerator may have refreshed itself while you were away.
Perhaps a sandwich has appeared. Perhaps the cheese has organized a small buffet. Perhaps the leftovers, after a period of reflection, have become appealing.
They have not.
The official explanation is that tired brains repeat familiar actions when they cannot quite decide what they want. The unofficial explanation is that every refrigerator contains a tiny overnight inventory manager who occasionally restocks the shelves, but only when nobody is looking.
The evidence for this employee remains limited.
Coffee helps because it restores the part of the brain responsible for accepting disappointing facts. After coffee, you can open the fridge once, identify the lemon, reject the mysterious container, and proceed directly to toast.
Before coffee, the fridge is a browser window and you are pressing refresh.
Again.
And again.
Waiting for lunch to load.
Coffee note
Daily Coffee News rounded up several current industry developments this week, including Lavazza’s U.S. launch of Tablì, a single-serve system that uses compressed tablets made entirely from ground coffee instead of individually packaged plastic capsules.
Apparently coffee can now arrive as a tablet. The refrigerator has been informed that innovation is possible and has until noon to produce a sandwich.
