That song in your head was planted overnight

Posted 22/10/2026

You wake up, open one eye, and discover that your brain has already begun broadcasting.

Not a song you love. Not even a song you would voluntarily finish in a grocery store.

It is the chorus from something you heard once near a pharmacy in 2007, now playing inside your skull with the confidence of a sold-out stadium tour.

People call this an earworm. Convenient.

I prefer the more accurate term: unauthorized overnight programming.

While you slept, a tiny committee apparently reviewed every song you have ever enjoyed, rejected all of them, and selected the one melody most likely to make you question your own citizenship in the human race.

The committee has no office, no phone number, and no complaints department. It does, however, begin work before sunrise.

This is why coffee matters.

Coffee cannot evict the song immediately. That would require paperwork. But it can restore enough executive function to negotiate with it.

After the first few sips, you may replace the chorus with a better song. After the second cup, you may remember the artist. By noon, you may even accept that the song was not terrible; you simply objected to being ambushed before your feet had agreed to participate in the day.

The morning brain is less a radio than a haunted jukebox. Coffee is the person who arrives with the key.

Coffee note

The Specialty Coffee Association reports that specialty coffee consumption is growing in producing countries including Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Rwanda. More independent cafés and greater interest in manually brewed coffee are helping shorten supply chains, strengthen local coffee culture, and create opportunities for producers to retain more value.
