There's a moment that happens to almost everyone. A song from years ago comes on, completely out of nowhere, and suddenly your chest does something weird. Not sad exactly. Not happy either. Just... big. Like your emotions got the memo before your brain even opened the envelope.
Scientists will tell you it's memory. Therapists will nod and talk about the subconscious. But here's what nobody seems to say out loud: your emotions are often way faster than your logic. They sprint ahead, feel everything first, and leave your rational brain stumbling behind trying to catch up with an explanation.
That's why certain songs hit harder at 7am than at noon. Your defenses aren't up yet. Your overthinking hasn't clocked in. You're still soft around the edges, and then boom, some song from a random Tuesday in 2009 absolutely floors you.
Music doesn't ambush you when you're sharp. It ambushes you when you're half-asleep, unguarded, and running on fumes. Which, honestly, is most mornings for most people.
Here's the thing though. There's something beautiful about getting ambushed by your own feelings. It means you're still in there. Still paying attention. Still human.
And maybe, just maybe, the right cup of coffee isn't just about waking your body up. It's about waking the rest of you up too, the curious part, the alive part, the part that notices when something sounds beautiful.

Cheers to staying awake in all the right ways
