So there's this legend about a sea monster the size of an island that would wrap its tentacles around ships and yank them straight down to the ocean floor. Sailors swore they saw it with their own bloodshot eyes. Historians say it was probably just a giant squid. But here's what nobody talks about: those sailors had been up since 3am scrubbing decks, navigating by stars, and eating hardtack that could break teeth.
Of course they were seeing monsters.
Sleep deprivation does weird things to your brain. Studies show that after just 24 hours without sleep, your brain starts acting like you've had a few drinks. After 48 hours, you might as well be seeing pink elephants doing backflips. The Kraken probably looked pretty convincing when you're running on two hours of sleep and whatever questionable liquid they called "grog" back then.
But here's the thing about those sailors that nobody mentions in the dramatic retellings: they didn't have coffee. Not the good stuff anyway. They were sailing around fighting imaginary sea beasts without a proper caffeine lifeline. That's like going into battle with a butter knife.
Today's version of the Kraken is that email inbox that somehow multiplied overnight. Or that meeting that could've been an email but somehow turned into three meetings. Or Monday morning itself, really. The monsters look different now but they're just as real when you're staring at them through tired eyes.
The good news is you don't have to fight your modern-day Kraken without backup.
No political nonsense. Just coffee, sarcasm, and the occasional conspiracy theory about who really invented the French press. That’s where we aim.
