Pockets are basically tiny chaos agents living in your pants. You reach in with full confidence expecting your keys and instead pull out a receipt from 2014, a mystery rock, and what appears to be a fossilized French fry. Nobody put those things there intentionally. They just appeared. Because pockets do what they want.
The wild part is that this phenomenon gets significantly worse when you are running on zero sleep and less than one coffee. Your brain is in survival mode, shoving random objects into random places and filing zero mental notes about it. Phone in the freezer. Wallet on top of the fridge. Keys inside a shoe. Classic sleep-deprived human behavior.
Science probably has a very boring explanation for all of this involving memory consolidation and cognitive load. But the more entertaining explanation is that pockets are sentient and mischievous and they feed on your confusion. Either way the solution remains the same.
Coffee fixes this. Not metaphorically. Not as a lifestyle vibe. Actually fixes it. A properly caffeinated human is a focused human who places objects in logical locations and generally remembers where those locations are. Studies that we may or may not have made up suggest that coffee reduces unintended pocket chaos by at least 70 percent. The other 30 percent is just the pocket being weird on purpose.
